Gudauri: Georgia's Ski Resort That Surprises Even Experienced Skiers

Share:

Gudauri is not just the closest ski resort to Tbilisi - it is one of the few places in the world where runs descend from 3,300 meters, a lift starts right from the village, and after skiing you can be in the capital in 2.5 hours, enjoying khinkali and sulfur baths.

The resort is located 120 km from Tbilisi on the Georgian Military Highway - the same road that leads to Kazbegi. This combination is what makes Gudauri special: the Caucasus mountains here are the real thing, snow falls heavily from December through April, and the infrastructure has grown in recent years to a level where comparisons with smaller Alpine resorts no longer seem like an exaggeration.

Gudauri: a quick overview

Gudauri sits on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus at an altitude of 2,196 meters above sea level. This means that even the base village of the resort is at an elevation where many Alpine resorts have their runs ending.

The resort's infrastructure has been developing since 1989, when the first lift was opened here. Much has changed since then: old chairlifts are gradually being replaced by modern gondolas, new runs are being laid out, and hotels and apartments are being built. Today Gudauri offers 57 km of groomed runs, 9 lifts, and a ski area that suits both beginners and confident skiers.

The resort caters to a wide audience: families with children, groups of friends, couples, and professionals who come for fresh snow and relatively low prices compared to European destinations.

Slopes and ski zones: what awaits on the mountain

The overall picture

The ski area at Gudauri is divided into several sectors connected by a lift system. The highest point is 3,300 meters; the lowest is around 1,990 meters at the main Sadzele sector. The vertical drop on the best runs reaches 1,000 meters.

Runs are distributed by difficulty level:

  • Green (beginners): wide, gentle slopes in the lower section
  • Blue (intermediate): the bulk of the skiing, comfortable gradient
  • Red (advanced): steep sections in the upper zone
  • Black (expert): several runs with a serious gradient and moguls

For freeride, Gudauri is one of the best destinations in the post-Soviet space. Wide open bowls beneath the ridge crests, gentle valleys, and deep powder after snowfall attract experienced skiers from many countries. Most freeride exits are accessible from the upper lifts without long hikes.

Lifts

Gudauri has 9 lifts of various types:

  • The modern 8-person Kobi Gondola - the main lift, connecting Gudauri with Jvari Pass
  • Several 4-person chairlifts in the main sectors
  • Drag lifts in the beginner zones

Queues during morning rush hours on peak weekends do occur, but they are significantly shorter than at popular European resorts. On weekdays the slopes are practically empty.

Connection to the Kobi Plateau

One of Gudauri's main features is the ability to reach the Kobi Plateau via a pass at over 3,000 meters. From here you can see Mount Kazbek (5,047 m) and the ridges stretching toward Russia - this is one of the most spectacular mountain views accessible by lift in Georgia. The descent from the plateau into the Kobi valley through untouched snow is Gudauri's classic freeride route.

When to go: the ski season in Gudauri

The season officially opens in December and runs through April. But different months offer entirely different experiences.

December: snow is already present, but coverage is still uneven. Fewer runs are open than in February. The atmosphere of a pre-New Year resort. Prices are lower.

January - February: peak season. Snow cover is at its maximum, all runs are open, the most skiers are on the mountain. Accommodation needs to be booked 3-4 weeks in advance. Prices are higher.

March: for many experienced skiers this is the best month. Snow is still excellent, there is more sunshine, the temperature is more comfortable, and there are noticeably fewer tourists. A spring ski day can last 5-6 hours in good weather.

April: the season winds down, lower runs start to melt while upper ones still operate. Prices are at their lowest and the atmosphere is relaxed. Good for those who want to combine skiing with the first spring walks.

Food and apres-ski in Gudauri

Gudauri is a resort village and its gastronomy reflects that: there are many restaurants, prices are above the average Georgian level, but there is something for every taste.

Where to eat

Georgio's: one of the most popular spots at the resort. Georgian cuisine, generous portions, a warm atmosphere after skiing. The khinkali and khachapuri here are done right.

Gudauri Hut: a cafe right on the slope, next to one of the lifts. Handy for lunch without skiing back down to the village: soup, hot tea, Georgian snacks.

Hotel restaurants: most large hotels have their own restaurants with varied menus - from Georgian cuisine to Italian pasta.

Apres-ski

After skiing, Gudauri comes surprisingly alive. Several bars and clubs operate in the village, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. It is not Courchevel, but there is atmosphere: live music, local wine, and conversations with skiers from different countries.

Daily food and drinks budget: 60-100 GEL for meals at restaurants plus a couple of drinks in the evening.

Summer Gudauri: what to do outside the ski season

Gudauri is not only a winter resort. In summer, from May to October, several outdoor activities are available here.

Paragliding

Gudauri is one of the best paragliding spots in Georgia. The launch altitude, thermal currents, and panorama of the Caucasus ridge create ideal flying conditions. A tandem flight with an instructor is available with no special training required.

Cost of a tandem flight: 120-200 GEL. Duration: 10-20 minutes in the air.

Hiking and cycling

In summer the slopes of Gudauri are covered with alpine meadows. Several hiking trails lead to summits and viewpoints. Cycling infrastructure is developing: some lifts operate in summer for bikers and walkers.

Quad bikes and jeep tours

In summer, tours by quad bike and off-road vehicle run from Gudauri to Jvari Pass, the Kobi Plateau, and other points unreachable on foot. Cost: 80-150 GEL per person.

The Georgian Military Highway

Gudauri sits right on the Georgian Military Highway, and in summer this becomes an advantage: the Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri Monastery, the Aragvi Gorge, and Kazbegi - all within 40-60 km in either direction. A great day-trip route using Gudauri as a base.

Safety on the slopes

Gudauri is a technically uncomplicated resort, but mountains are mountains, and a few rules are worth following regardless of your skiing level.

A helmet is essential. On Gudauri's slopes the consensus is clear: everyone wears a helmet, regardless of age or ability. Rental shops offer helmets at a reasonable price.

Freeride - only with a guide on your first time. The bowls beyond the ridge are beautiful, but avalanche risk is real. Snow cover in Gudauri is deep, and freeriding without knowing the terrain is a serious risk. Your first off-piste outing should be with a local guide.

Insurance with ski sport coverage. Standard travel insurance does not always include mountain sports. Before your trip, check your policy: it must cover skiing and helicopter evacuation if needed.

Weather changes fast. Visibility at Jvari Pass can drop within minutes. Keep an eye on the forecast and pay attention to information about closed runs.

Gudauri versus other ski resorts in Georgia

Georgia has several ski destinations, and Gudauri is not the only one.

Bakuriani - a resort in Samtskhe-Javakheti, 200 km from Tbilisi. Smaller in size, lower in altitude (up to 2,000 m), oriented toward family holidays. Fewer runs, slightly lower prices, a quieter atmosphere.

Tetnuldi (Svaneti) - a small resort in the mountains of Svaneti that opened in 2016. Altitude up to 3,165 meters, views of Ushba and Shkhara, high freeride potential. Logistically more demanding: you need to get to Mestia and then travel another 10 km. Suited to those who want to combine skiing with Svaneti.

Goderdzi (Adjara) - a young resort near Akhaltsikhe and Batumi. Soft snow, subtropical vegetation nearby, views of the sea on clear days. Developing rapidly, but still behind Gudauri in terms of infrastructure.

Conclusion: for a first ski trip to Georgia - Gudauri. For those who have already been and want something new - Tetnuldi or Goderdzi.

The right equipment, accommodation booked in advance, and a few days to spare - and Gudauri will deliver exactly the winter experience that brings people here.
