Georgian Military Road
The Georgian-Georgian road was built two hundred years ago, after the accession of Georgia to the Russian Empire. In those years, the journey from Tiflis took at least a month. In the village of Gudauri, today it is a young, developing, but already well-known ski resort, the building of the post station has survived, where travelers could exchange horses.
Ananuri
To the Cross Pass the road goes along the course of the Aragvi River. Past the wonderful beauty of the Zhinvalsky reservoir formed in the Soviet years, traditional mountain villages in Georgia. We will stay in Ananuri, at the once impregnable fortress, which served as an outpost of defense and the residence of the rulers of this land 400 years ago. We will pass through the mountain gorges, we will climb the sheer cliffs along the fast mountain rivers. To the right and to our left will rise the snow-covered giants, and the main and most powerful of them Kazbek.
Stepantsminda (Kazbegi)
At the foot of Kazbeg is the ultimate goal of our journey. The settlement of Stepantsminda (Kazbegi). This is a unique climate zone. The village is located on the left bank of the still young, but already turbulent Terek, starting its way to the Caspian Sea from these places. In addition to the beautiful view of Mount Kazbek, amazingly beautiful surroundings and the purest mountain air, the village boasts unique cultural monuments.
We will visit a unique temple, located at an altitude of 2170 meters above sea level. From the bottom, from the bank of the Terek, the Gergeti Church of the Holy Trinity (Gergetis Tsminda Sameba) looks like a tiny fragment of past centuries, times of greatness of the human spirit.
Alexander Pushkin, who visited these places, was amazed by their beauty. His description of the Gergeti Church accurately conveys the feeling of the infinite power of the ancient mountains and the miracle built by people.
A.S. Pushkin
High above the family of mountains
Kazbek, your royal tent
Shines with eternal rays.
Your monastery is beyond the clouds,
As in the sky, a rushing ark,
Soars, slightly prominent, over the mountains.
Distant, desired breg!
There used b, saying forgive the gorge,
Rise to the free height!
There used to, in transcendental cell,
In the neighborhood of God hide me!
"Monastery on Kazbek", 1829
We are also waiting for lunch in a traditional mountain family where you will see how the highlanders live, and the hospitable hostess will hold a master class on hinkali for everyone. (lunch is charged separately).
