Do I need a visa to Georgia?

No and Yes! A visa to Georgia is not required for citizens of 98 countries out of 193 recognized for 2023.

Georgia is known for its hospitality and rather liberal visa policy. Georgia is open to 98 countries. Also, with a valid visa of one of the 50 countries in the passport, you can cross the border of Georgia or even without it in some cases.

Citizens of these countries may be eligible for visa-free entry to Georgia for 1 year. There is only a restriction on staying in Georgia without a visa for citizens:

  • Iran - 45 days

Other categories exempt from obtaining a visa to Georgia:

Foreigners with a residence permit or a temporary residence permit of a refugee or a person with humanitarian status for the period of validity of the above documents.

Foreigners, holders of UN travel documents or its special. institutions (Laissez-Passer), with the opportunity to stay in Georgia without a visa for a full 1 year.

Travelers subject to the Decree No. 256 of the Government of Georgia may enter Georgia and stay for 90 days during any 180-day period.

Holders of diplomatic or official/service passports: China, Egypt, Guyana, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Indonesia and Peru.

Compatriots living abroad, citizens of countries that require a visa to enter Georgia, have the right to cross the state border of Georgia without a visa and stay in Georgia for no more than 30 days (here it is worth clarifying who Georgia considers a compatriot at the consulate).

Members of the crew of an international airline, rail or sea transport and passengers who require a temporary change of carrier or vehicle and who have a document confirming the right to enter the destination country do not need a visa for transit movement in Georgia. The period of stay in Georgia is not more than 10 (ten) days. Passengers are not allowed to leave the area specially designated for transit at the airport, railway station or seaport.

Types of Georgian visas and how to get

The Georgian visa is divided into the following types:

  • Diplomatic (A)
  • Special (B)
  • Ordinary (C)
  • Immigration (D)
  • Transit (T)

There are short-term and long-term visas with the right of single or multiple entry. Please note that the total period of stay of foreigners in Georgia during any 180-day period should not exceed 90 calendar days.

After you have decided on the type of visa you need, you can apply for it at the consulate or use the E-Visa electronic portal

To do this, go to the official website. Then follow the instructions: fill out the form, get an email confirmation, and pay the fee. So you will get a regular category C visa for a tourist visit to Georgia. The response time to the visa application is 5 days.
